‘Welcome to Disturbia’
I was approached by Joey, a friend from cheltenham in early February 2022 to produce a large scale drawing to be hung inside his barbers studio. The brief was not very specific with no deadline - Joey was happy to give me creative licence. I knew I wanted the image to be very detailed and portray a ‘labyrinth-like’ structure that the viewer could spend lots of time looking at whilst waiting for a fresh-cut.
I started the illustration on a 400gsm 1530mm x 1220mm sheet of drawing paper, working inside my Dad’s workshop. The process of sketching out the lettering, characters and inking was very sporadic to begin with and then became more slow and methodical. Weaving characters around buildings and maintaining a sense of depth and perspective was challenging.

Projects
In September 2022 I was riding at the ‘Everyday Safari’ BMX jam in Bristol. Whilst out riding with the close knit community of Bristol riders I met Stefan.
Stefan is one of the founders of ‘Rattlehood Records’ and is a talented artist living in between Bristol and his home city Pula in Croatia.
During the jam we got talking and shared some ideas about collaborating on future projects including album artwork for a new EP getting released later that year.
The EP ‘Hindsight’ by ‘Bonedef’ was due to release in December 2022 through Rattlehood Records.
With consistent communication with both Stefan and Micheal (Bonedef) plans were hatched to create an album cover that included a city scape with its inhabitants of characterised rodents.
Stefan has designed many of the album and EP covers for Rattlehood Records that include similar themes. He wanted me to create a design that had witty characters resembling a style close to 1970’s cartoon animation.
Once I finished the design I collaborated with Stefan on the colouring. Stefan used his digital skills to colour the final image and bring the project to a close.
It was a great experience working with Stefan and Micheal on this. The final design along with the ‘hazey’ purple finish complements the mellow and melancholy feeling of the album. Go and check it out!
